One Simple Hack to Make Your Self-Storage Experience So Much Easier
If there’s one thing I recommend to every customer, it’s this: make an inventory of what you’ve stored. It sounds simple, but it’ll make your storage life so much easier — and it’s really useful for insurance too
Hi, it’s Fiona here from Lock and Load Storage in Mablethorpe 👋
.
What’s an Inventory?
Basically, it’s just a list of what you’ve stored and where it is. You can keep it super simple — a handwritten list stuck to your locker door — or go a bit more detailed with a spreadsheet that includes things like purchase dates, serial numbers, and values.
If you’re using your storage for household items, you might also want to note down replacement values for insurance purposes. There are even handy apps that help with home inventories, but honestly, a notepad or phone note works just as well.
Why Bother Making an Inventory?
Here are a few good reasons:
- 🧺 Stay organised – No more wondering which box the Christmas lights or summer duvets are in.
- 💷 Save money – Avoid buying duplicates of things you already own but can’t find.
- 🔐 Keep things secure – You can number boxes instead of labelling them with what’s inside (e.g. “Box 3A” instead of “Vinyl Records”) and use your inventory to track what’s in each box.
- 🧾 Insurance peace of mind – If anything ever happens, you’ll have a clear record of what was in your unit.
Plus, if you ever decide to downsize or reorganise your unit, your inventory makes it easy to see what you actually need and what can go.
How to Make a Storage Inventory
The best time to start is when you’re moving things into your unit. Write down what’s going in and roughly where you’ve placed it. If you’ve already filled your locker, don’t worry — just start listing what you can remember and update it next time you visit.
You can go digital (spreadsheet or app) or keep it simple with a notebook — whatever works best for you. If multiple family members use the unit, I recommend sticking a sheet on the inside of the door so everyone can jot down what goes in or out.
Final Tip
If it’s not on your inventory, it’s easy to forget it’s there — or worse, forget it’s not there anymore! So take a few minutes to keep it up to date. Trust me, it’ll save you time, money, and stress in the long run.
Keeping things organised is what we’re all about here at Lock and Load, and we’re always happy to help if you’ve got questions about storage or insurance.
