Moving House? Here’s What to Think About Before You Go - Download our check list at end.
Moving house might be exciting, but let’s be honest—it’s also a massive mental load. Between packing, paperwork, and trying not to lose your mind (or your scissors), it helps to have a clear plan.
Here’s what to think about before the big day:
1. Give Notice
If you’re renting, don’t forget to give your landlord the correct notice—preferably in writing.
2. Declutter First
There’s no point moving stuff you don’t want. Clear out the junk and donate what you can. Then, book a removals company early—good ones get snapped up fast.
3. Kids and Pets Need a Plan
Think ahead about where they’ll be on moving day. A calmer environment makes it easier for everyone.
4. Update Your Details
Make a list of who needs your new address: banks, schools, doctors, workplaces—the lot.
5. Redirect Mail
Set up mail redirection so nothing important gets lost in the shuffle.
6. Check Your Car and Route
If you're driving, make sure the car’s in good shape and check your route—especially if you're going a long way.
7. Pack Smart
Label boxes, keep essentials separate, and shut down appliances properly.
8. Tell Friends and Family
They’ll want to know where to find you—and maybe lend a hand!
9. Confirm Everything
Make sure your solicitor or estate agent has everything they need in writing. Don’t assume—it’s worth double-checking.
10. Keep Valuables With You
Jewellery, passports, medication—anything important should stay close.
11. Prep the Day Before
Pack a moving day kit: kettle, phone charger, toilet roll, snacks, and anything else you’ll need quickly.
12. Know Where Things Are
Make a list of where to find things like the fuse box, stopcock, or important documents in the new place.
13. Take Meter Readings
Note your final gas, electric, and water readings so you don’t end up overpaying.
14. One Last Walkthrough
Check cupboards, drawers, lofts—don’t leave anything behind!
15. Say Goodbye
Take a moment. Say goodbye to your old space and thank it for what it gave you. Then head off to start your new chapter.
Moving doesn’t have to break you.
Take it step-by-step, breathe, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’ve got this.
